Cosy and warm in 10 minutes
Golden milk – also called turmeric latte – is the creamy drink from Ayurvedic cuisine. The secret of a really good recipe: high-quality turmeric and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Makes 2 cups.
What you need
All quantities for 2 cups.
The spices
1 tsp ground turmeric · ½ tsp cinnamon · 1 piece of fresh ginger · 1 pinch of black Kampot pepper
The base
400 ml milk or oat/almond drink
For finishing
1 tsp honey or maple syrup · ½ tsp coconut oil for creaminess
Step by step

Step 1
Warm gently
Warm the milk in a small saucepan – do not let it boil, or the flavour suffers.

Step 2
Seasoning
Stir in the turmeric, cinnamon, grated ginger and the pinch of pepper.

Step 3
Let it steep
Simmer gently for five minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4
Finishing
Remove from the heat, stir in the honey and coconut oil, froth if you like and serve with a pinch of cinnamon.

Why golden milk needs pepper
An old principle of Ayurvedic cuisine: turmeric is almost never used alone. The piperine in black pepper significantly improves the absorption of curcumin. Aromatic Kampot pepper blends in more harmoniously than sharp standard pepper.
Questions about the recipe
Can the recipe be made vegan?
Yes – with oat or almond drink and maple syrup instead of honey.
Can I use fresh turmeric?
Yes, finely grate a thumb-sized piece. Ground turmeric, however, dissolves more evenly.
